Sprinklers, if a Sierra Madre unit needs them, take their water from the same service that feeds the house, and the size of that line limits how far back the unit can sit. Pressure drops along each added length of pipe and at each fitting. We read the meter size and test static pressure at a hose bib, then place the unit where the line can still supply the heads and the fixtures.

Sizing the line to the unit

A unit with no sprinklers can usually branch from the house line after the meter. One with sprinklers may need a larger meter, a new line from the street or both, and the water purveyor sets those terms. We run the hydraulic numbers before the footprint is final, since moving the unit nearer the street can sometimes spare a meter upgrade. Where code allows, the water line shares a trench with the electrical feeder, which means a single dig across the yard. Sewer depth gets checked on that visit too.

The hardened shell and its review

Mapped fire hazard ground reaches some Sierra Madre parcels, and on those the unit's walls, glass, vents, eaves and roof all have to meet the state wildfire chapter. Our plan set pairs the exterior sheet with a utility sheet showing the water line, the meter and any sprinkler riser, so the building reviewer and the fire authority read the same facts side by side. Comments are answered in writing, and you see each reply before it goes back to the department.
