Where a deck puts a house at risk

A wood deck attached to the wall can carry fire straight to the house. Embers collect in gaps between boards and in the dry litter underneath. We build decks so the surface resists ignition and the space below cannot fill with debris.

Decking, framing and the area underneath

We use decking that meets the wildfire code, such as rated composites, fire-treated wood or noncombustible materials. Under the deck we either enclose the framing with a rated skirt or keep it open and clear so nothing builds up. The scope names the material for each layer.

Patios as a fire break

A paver, concrete or tile patio next to the house gives a hard surface where nothing burns. When a deck is being replaced, a patio near the walls with a deck farther out is one option worth weighing.
