Built into a corner of a Northridge ADU, a dining bench with storage under its seat lets a small table seat several people without chairs blocking the aisle. A window above the bench brings daylight onto the table, and we frame it into the wall so the exterior stays continuous around the opening. The rest of the shell follows the same thinking: noncombustible siding, screened vents and tempered glass.

Sizing the corner

Seat depth, table reach and the height of the bench back set the size of the corner, and we draw them at scale before the walls are fixed. The table can hang from the wall on a single leg so knees and feet clear it, and the aisle beside it stays open to the kitchen. Hinged lids or drawers under the seat hold linens, pantry overflow and luggage. An outlet at table height next to the bench lets the corner double as a desk, and a pendant light over the table is wired on its own switch.

The window and the wall behind it

The window over the bench is tempered and dual glazed in a fiberglass or metal frame, because radiant heat from a nearby fire can crack ordinary glass well before flames arrive. The wall around it is insulated and sealed like the rest of the shell, with flashing lapped at the head and sill so water drains out over the cladding. An operable sash gets a fine metal screen. Outside, the sill sits above any planting, and the ground beneath it stays clear of mulch or anything else that would burn.
