Gutter and Roof Edge Hardening in San Dimas
San Dimas gutter and roof edge work with metal gutters, noncombustible guards and a sealed drip edge, so dry leaves and embers have nowhere to catch.
The gutter line gets the hardest look we give any part of a San Dimas exterior. Under general inland conditions, with dry spells and wind that strips leaves from trees, a gutter fills with litter that an ember can light. A burning gutter sits right against the fascia and the roof edge, so a small fire there can reach the attic quickly. When rain does arrive, that same gutter has to carry it off the house.
Metal at the edge
We replace plastic or rotted wood gutters with aluminum or galvanized steel formed in long continuous runs, hung on hidden hangers driven through the fascia into the rafter tails. A metal drip edge runs along the eave beneath the underlayment and over the back of the gutter, so water cannot creep down behind it onto the fascia board. Where the fascia is wood, we check it for rot and either wrap it in metal or replace it with a noncombustible board. A gutter guard of perforated metal or fine metal mesh keeps the trough from filling with leaves between cleanings.
Carrying the water off
A clean gutter only helps if what it collects leaves the house. We pitch each run toward its downspout, size the downspouts for the roof area they drain, and add a kickout flashing wherever a roof edge dies into a wall, since that corner can send water straight into the plaster. At grade, each downspout empties onto a splash block or into a drain line that carries water clear of the foundation and the weep screed. The joints are then sealed and each run is flushed with a hose to prove it drains.
