On a Winnetka house we look hardest at the gable ends, the triangle of wall under each peak of the roof. That is where attic vents, wood trim and the joint between wall and roof all meet. An inland valley lot, in general, sees hard sun and dry wind, which open gaps in old paint and caulk up there. Wind can also push embers or debris toward any opening left in that triangle.

Vents in the triangle

A gable often carries a louvered vent that lets the attic breathe. Older ones may have wide openings or a torn screen behind the slats. We replace them with listed vents built to resist the entry of embers and flame, sized to keep the airflow the attic needs. The framed opening is checked for rot, and the new vent is flashed so rain running down the wall passes over its top edge. Where stored items or loose insulation sit close to the vent inside the attic, we note it so the space can be cleared.

Trim, siding and the rake

Wood rake boards and shingles in a gable dry out and split after long exposure to sun. Each split is a place for an ember to lodge. We replace damaged trim with fiber cement or a wrapped metal profile, and a gable faced in wood shingles can be stripped and finished in cement plaster or fiber cement panels. Before new cladding goes on, the sheathing is inspected and the weather barrier is lapped so water drains out at the bottom. The rake edge of the roof is then sealed tight to the wall, closing the gap at the top.
