San Gabriel ADU Construction with Guarded Gutters
San Gabriel ADUs with metal gutter guards that pass rain and keep dry leaves off the roof edge, plus rated vents and tempered glass on the walls.
Metal mesh covers fitted over the gutters of a San Gabriel ADU let rain drop through to the downspouts while dry leaves stay on top, where wind clears them away. A gutter packed with leaves is a strip of kindling running along the roof edge, and an ember that lands there can reach the fascia and the eave. Keeping water moving and fuel out is one job for the same part.
Choosing the guard
We specify guards made of stainless or aluminum mesh on a metal frame, since plastic screens soften under hard sun and can warp or melt near a flame. The mesh is fine enough to stop pine needles and small leaves yet open enough to take the heaviest rain the gutter is sized for. Guards clip under the first course of roofing or the drip edge, so they never open a gap at the roof line. The gutters themselves are aluminum or galvanized steel, pitched toward outlets at the corners, with end caps sealed tight.
Downspouts and the ground
Each downspout gets a leaf strainer at its top and drops into a solid pipe that leads clear of the slab and empties into a planted area, a dry well or the curb, depending on what the city allows. Around the unit, the first few feet of ground are kept in gravel or pavers, so nothing that falls from the roof edge lands in mulch. A hose run along each gutter after the leaves come down shows whether every outlet still drains freely, and the guards lift off for cleaning without tools.
ADU Construction in San Gabriel: common questions
Only parcels inside a mapped fire hazard zone fall under the wildfire chapter, and the city can confirm where a San Gabriel lot stands. We look it up before design. Guarded gutters, noncombustible cladding and tempered windows go on our units either way, because the fuel that gathers at a roof edge does not check a map first.
On a San Gabriel unit the roof plan names the gutter size, the guard and where each downspout lands, and the site plan follows that water to its outlet. Package drawings end at one story and the posted size cap, so a bigger unit is quoted apart.
Two roofs going up in the same stretch can share one gutter profile, one guard product and one drainage design, so runoff from both buildings reaches planned outlets and the grading around them is done in one pass. That pairing needs room on the parcel for both and the city's consent to the sequence.
