A sleeping alcove gives a Walnut studio ADU the feel of a bedroom without the walls of one. The bed sits in a recess off the main room, with a pocket door or a heavy curtain that closes it off, a reading light and an outlet on each side, and a window placed for morning light. The rest of the studio stays open for cooking, eating and sitting.

Laying out the alcove

The alcove needs room for the bed plus a clear path along one side, and the ceiling over it can drop a little to set it apart from the main room. Its window is sized and placed low enough to serve as an emergency exit, since any space used for sleeping must give a way out. A shelf above the headboard and drawers built under the bed hold what a dresser would. A smoke alarm goes inside the alcove and another in the main room, wired so both sound together.

Keeping it quiet and cool

With the kitchen a few steps away, the alcove sits at the far end of the studio and the range hood vents outdoors, so cooking noise and smells stay at the other end. Insulation in the walls and roof keeps the alcove comfortable when the sun is hard on the roof, and a ductless head or a ceiling fan moves air across the bed. The window takes tempered dual-pane glass in a frame that resists heat, and its screen is metal mesh, matching the hardened shell of the rest of the unit.
