A bathroom in a Covina ADU built for someone using a wheelchair or walker needs a clear circle of floor to turn in, a door wide enough to roll through, and a shower with no curb at its edge. Grab bars go where hands reach for them, which means blocking in the walls before drywall. The rest of the unit is planned outward from that room.

The curbless shower

To bring the shower floor flush with the room, the slab is recessed under the shower area before the pour, or the floor is built up around it. A linear drain along the back wall lets the whole floor slope one way, and a waterproof membrane runs up the walls and across the floor. A handheld shower on a slide bar, a fold-down seat and controls placed near the entry let someone wash while seated. Floor tile with a slip-resistant finish runs from the door into the shower with no change in height.

Doors, fixtures and light

A pocket door or an outward-swinging door keeps the floor clear inside. The toilet sits at a comfort height beside a grab bar, and the sink is wall-hung with open knee space under it. Lever handles on the faucet and the door suit hands that cannot grip well. An exhaust fan on a humidity control clears steam, and a window with tempered glass brings in daylight. Night lights at floor level mark the way from the bed, and the light switch sits low enough to reach from a chair.
