Choosing the door and frame
A hollow core slab gives little resistance to heat. We fit solid core wood, steel or fiberglass doors, hung in frames checked for rot at the foot of each jamb. Where the bottom of a jamb has softened, the bad length is cut out and a sound piece spliced in, or the whole frame is replaced. A metal threshold bedded in sealant, an adjustable sweep, and weatherstripping that runs unbroken around the head and sides complete the seal. Glass in a door or its sidelights must be safety glazing, and we use tempered dual pane units there.
Water at the head and sill
Rain that runs off a door head, or sits on a sill, can work its way behind cement plaster. Signs include stains spreading from a lower corner, a hollow sound when the wall is tapped, and cracks reaching out from the frame. Opening the plaster lets us rebuild the weather barrier in shingle order, each layer lapping the one below, with a metal head flashing over the door and a pan under the sill. New plaster then closes the wall. The City of Alhambra issues the permit, and the plans list each door and glazing product.
