Stucco & Exterior Walls in Alhambra
A moisture meter and a plastic mallet come first. Fernhill Builders inspects Alhambra stucco walls hands-on, then writes repair, re-stucco or siding options.
A moisture meter and a plastic mallet come out before any figure is written in Alhambra. Tapping the plaster in a grid shows where it has gone hollow, and the meter shows whether the framing behind it is damp. A tight urban lot also changes how scaffold, debris and deliveries move, so the walk-around records access along with the wall.
What the mallet tells us
A sound wall rings dull and even. Hollow patches chime higher, which means the bond between coats has let go. We mark each patch in chalk, then sketch cracks and note which ones are hairline and which have width. A tape gauge across a crack shows whether it still moves. Cracks that stay put can be routed and filled, and cracks that keep moving point to a framing or foundation cause that needs solving first. Photos of every marked area travel with the scope for later comparison.
Next stop, the openings
Water enters most often around windows, doors, hose bibs and roof-to-wall joints. We check head flashing, sill slope, the caulk lines and every pipe or conduit that passes through the plaster, noting each position because those spots are sealed with the new layers. The weep screed at the base gets probed for blockage. Findings go into the scope in plain order, and the scope states which layers come off, which stay and what building department filing the work may need. That chalk map becomes the repair outline, so nobody guesses at the edges later.
Stucco & Exterior in Alhambra: common questions
Alhambra walls can be built noncombustible with plaster on metal lath or with fiber cement lap siding. The better fit depends on what is behind the existing wall and how the house is trimmed. We look at the framing, the paper and the openings, then write the build up in layers so you can compare.
Patch when the mallet finds solid plaster and the meter reads dry. Strip to the sheathing where a tap sounds hollow across a wide area or moisture shows near a window or the base. A small inspection cut often settles it before anyone commits to the larger job.
The base is where plaster meets foundation. We check that a metal weep screed sits above grade or paving, that nothing blocks its drainage slots, and that no wood touches it. Where plaster has been run down into dirt, we cut it back and reset the line with proper clearance.
