Crushed granite and concrete pavers make up the strip of ground we specify right against the walls of an El Monte ADU, because neither one burns and neither holds the dry litter that hard sun and wind leave piled against a building. Bark mulch and shrubs in that strip give an ember a place to smolder beside the siding. Stone keeps the base of the wall bare and lets water drain through.

Building the strip

The ring runs out from the foundation a few feet on every side, with the ground under it graded to fall away from the slab. Filter fabric goes down first to keep weeds from coming up through the rock, then a compacted base and a top layer of crushed stone or pavers set on screenings. At each downspout, the rock gives way to a buried pipe or a splash pad, so roof water does not wash the stone out. Where a path crosses the strip to the door, pavers give a firm, level surface underfoot.

What stays out of it

Wood fences, firewood, plastic bins and trash carts are kept off the strip, and a fence that meets the unit ends at a metal gate or a masonry pier where it touches the wall. Plants beyond the strip can be low and well watered, set back so their branches stay clear of the eaves. Any foundation vents on the unit sit above the rock and carry the same listed ember screens as the attic vents. Nothing in that first stretch of ground can feed a fire up the wall, and the stone needs little upkeep.
