Building the deck from the frame up
On a raised deck, coated metal joists carry sheathing and a waterproof membrane, and the pedestals sit on that membrane. The space beneath is closed with a noncombustible skirt, or left open and kept clear so leaves cannot gather there. Where the deck meets the house, flashing laps up behind the cladding and over the ledger, and the wall along that line is stucco or fiber cement.
