Stucco & Exterior Walls in Redondo Beach
A Redondo Beach stucco job starts with removing damaged plaster and ends with a matched finish, in a fixed order. Fernhill Builders explains each step.
Rust is the first thing a Redondo Beach job has to get ahead of, so the work runs from the metal outward. Fernhill Builders removes failed plaster, replaces corroded lath and screed, rebuilds the barrier and then lays the coats. Salt in the air attacks steel, and each step is ordered so no corroded metal is covered over.
Metal first
Plaster is cut back until sound lath shows. Rusted lath, screed and fasteners come out and are replaced with galvanized or corrosion-resistant parts. Sheathing stained by rust or moisture is checked and replaced if soft. Only when the bare materials are sound is the wall closed in with new barrier, so the repair does not carry old damage forward under fresh plaster. Trim and flashing metal that shows early rust is replaced with a coated or stainless alternative, matched to the rest of the wall.
Layers, cure and finish
Barrier goes on lapped from the bottom up, then lath is fastened, and the screed sets the bottom edge. Plaster goes on in coats with curing time between them. The finish is sampled on the wall to match. Fiber cement siding follows the same order of barrier, flashing and boards, and trim finishes the job. A last pass checks the screed and every opening for gaps. Sealant joints are checked once the finish coat has cured, since they take the most wear.

Stucco & Exterior in Redondo Beach: common questions
Boards of fiber cement and plaster on lath will not ignite. Near the water, corrosion-resistant metals matter too, and the wall needs closed eaves and a sealed base to be a complete assembly. Ask the city building department which rules apply to a lot.
If the plaster is firm and the cracks are fine, a patch will do. Rust bleeding through paint, hollow sections or soft sheathing call for a strip and rebuild. The test opening shows how far corrosion has traveled.
A zinc-coated screed sets the plaster above the ground. Soil, pavers and mulch are pulled back, and noncombustible filler closes the seam at the foundation, leaving water a clear route out. Planter beds are kept off that strip so the screed can drain freely.
