ADU Construction in Redondo Beach, from Curb to Backyard
Redondo Beach ADUs with stucco plaster pumped by hose from the curb to the back of the lot, sparing side yards from wheelbarrows and spilled mix.
Plaster for a Redondo Beach ADU can travel to the back of the lot through a hose. A mixer and pump parked at the curb push cement plaster along a line laid through the side yard, so the scratch, brown and finish coats that give the unit its noncombustible skin arrive without a wheelbarrow crossing the lawn. Lath, framing and roofing still need a planned route, and we map that on the first walk.
The route for everything else
Framing lumber and lath rolls come through the side yard by hand or on carts, so we measure the narrowest point and every turn between the curb and the unit's footprint. Roof trusses are the longest pieces, and if they cannot make the turn, the roof is framed on site from shorter lumber. Steel or aluminum roof panels are rolled to length and carried flat by a pair of workers. Plywood goes down over walkways and planting beds, and the main house's walls along the route get padding where a load could brush them.
Protecting the yard and the neighbors
A plaster hose crossing a side yard is a tripping hazard, so it is taped down and marked, and it is pulled out at the end of each day. Overspray from plaster is caught by plastic sheeting on the house, fences and plants nearby. Tools and the pump are rinsed clean before storage, since cement left to cure inside a hose ruins it. When the work is done, the route is cleaned, and any fence panel removed for access goes back where it stood.
ADU Construction in Redondo Beach: common questions
Ember-resistance rules from the code reach a parcel only if it is mapped as a fire hazard zone, a question the City of Redondo Beach answers by address. We plan stucco walls, tempered glass, ember-resistant vents and a Class A roof regardless, as these hold up near the water and resist embers on any lot.
In Redondo Beach, the site plan answers the first questions, showing where the unit stands, the setbacks and whether the parcel sits inside the coastal zone, and the wall drawings detail the stucco assembly over its weather barrier. Our package draws a qualifying one-story unit, and larger designs are taken on with a scope of their own.
It might be, subject to the lot and to how the main house is permitted. With both underway, the plaster pump can serve both buildings on the same trip, and the route through the side yard is planned once for the pair of jobs, which keeps the yard disturbed for a shorter stretch.
