Siding Replacement and Wall Repair in Arleta
Fiber cement and cement plaster to replace split wood siding on Arleta houses, with a new water barrier, window flashing and the LADBS permit from Fernhill.
Of everything on the outside of an Arleta house, the wall cladding covers the most area, which is why it gets most of our attention. Wood lap boards dried out by inland sun and wind tend to split, cup and pull from their nails. Rain then works behind them in a storm, and the raised edges give a passing spark something to catch. A noncombustible face deals with the water and the fire risk in one job.
Choosing the new face
Fiber cement lap boards will not burn, take paint well under strong sun, and can be cut to the same exposure as the old siding so the lines of the house stay put. Panel and batten suits a gable end or an addition. Cement plaster gives an unbroken wall and adds fire resistance to the assembly, though it needs curing time between coats and changes the look. Corner boards and window trim go to fiber cement or metal too. A wood trim piece left beside new siding becomes the weakest point on the wall and the likeliest place for flame to start.
Under the boards
Stripping the old siding exposes the sheathing, and any rot near the windows or along the sill plate is repaired before the wall is closed again. A water resistive barrier goes on next, each course lapped over the one below so water drains outward. Every window gets a sill pan, and its flanges are taped into that barrier. Where the cladding allows, a slim drainage space behind it lets damp air escape. Pipe and wire penetrations are sealed against embers and pests alike. Recladding a full wall in Arleta is permitted through LADBS.
