Where a wood side fence runs up to an Arleta backyard unit, its last few feet act like a fuse that can carry flame straight to the wall. We swap that stretch for powder-coated steel or aluminum panels, which neither burn nor warp under hard sun and dry wind. The wall the fence meets is clad in fiber cement or cement plaster, and the windows in it are tempered.

The metal stretch

The metal section runs from the unit's wall out to a point several feet away, where it joins the existing wood fence on a steel post. Gates in that stretch are metal as well, with latches that open from both sides. Powder-coated finishes hold their color in strong sun and skip the regular staining wood demands. Posts sit in concrete footings separate from the unit's foundation, so a fence that leans with age never pushes on the slab. Mulch and planting at the base of the panels give way to gravel.

Around the rest of the unit

The fence connection is one of several places a backyard building can catch fire from something beside it. A trellis or pergola attached to the wall is built in metal for the same reason, and the site plan leaves a gravel or paved strip around the walls where bins and firewood have no place. Vents carry fine metal mesh, eaves are enclosed and the roof covering is Class A. LADBS reviews the exterior assemblies, and the fence detail is noted on the site plan so it gets built as drawn.
