Roof and Attic Hardening in Van Nuys
Fire rated roofing, metal gutter guards and baffled attic vents for Van Nuys houses, with an exterior hardening scope and LADBS permits from Fernhill.
How much of a Van Nuys roof has to change before the house is better protected from embers? Often only a few parts of it. The covering itself may already carry a fire rating, and the weak spots tend to be at the edges and openings: gutters packed with dry leaves, attic vents with wide mesh and gaps where the roof meets a wall. We look at each of those and say in writing which parts are worth replacing.
Gutters, valleys and the roof edge
Leaves and needles that collect in a gutter or a roof valley are dry tinder sitting against the decking. We clean them out, check the gutter for rust and loose hangers, and fit metal guards that keep debris from settling while still letting water through. A metal drip edge under the first course of roofing covers the gap at the deck edge. Where a roof slope meets a wall, the step and counter flashing are checked, since a lifted piece there lets embers and rain reach the framing behind.
Attic vents that block embers
An attic needs airflow, and the vents that provide it are also the easiest entry for sparks. Older gable and soffit vents with coarse screens can be replaced with listed units that use fine mesh or internal baffles. Ridge vents are checked for a matching rating. We work out how much vent area the attic needs so the swap keeps moisture under control. Most of this happens from the roof and the eaves. If roof framing has to be repaired along the way, that portion is permitted through LADBS.
