Most of the daylight in a Manhattan Beach ADU's main room arrives through one wide glass door, so we draw that room around it. The door sets where the sofa goes, where the table fits and which way the unit faces the main house. It also carries the most glass in the building, and that glass has to be tempered, insulated and held in a frame that stands up to damp, salty air.
Laying out the room
The door goes on the wall that looks onto the widest stretch of open yard, away from the main house's windows where possible, so both buildings keep some privacy. Seating faces the glass, with the kitchen run along the wall behind it and a table between the two. We leave a clear path from the door to the bedroom and the bathroom, so a person carrying groceries never edges past furniture. A smaller window on a side wall brings cross breezes, and every switch sits where the hand finds it on the way in.
The door itself
A multi-panel slider or a hinged pair both work, as long as the glass is dual pane with a tempered outer layer that holds up under radiant heat. Near the water we choose fiberglass frames with stainless rollers and hardware, because aluminum sliders with steel parts can corrode and start to stick. The sill gets a pan flashing that drains outward and a threshold that sits flush for easy rolling. A deep roof overhang above keeps rain and afternoon glare off the glass and helps the door stay clean.
