Stucco & Exterior Walls in Altadena
An Altadena stucco job is built from the framing outward, under county permit review. Fernhill Builders sets the order before work starts.
Nothing gets troweled in Altadena until the layers beneath it are right, so the work starts at the framing and builds outward. Rotted studs or sheathing are replaced first, then paper, flashing and lath go on, and only after that do the plaster coats follow. Altadena is unincorporated, so the county building department reviews the permit. Where wildfire mapping covers the lot, plan check also applies the fire chapter of the building code.
Inside out
Framing and sheathing come first, because plaster is only as sound as what it is fastened to. Water-resistive paper follows, lapped from the bottom up so each sheet sheds onto the one below. Flashing goes over the openings, and the metal screed at the base is set with open space under it. Lath comes next, nailed through the paper into the framing. All of this is visible to the county inspector, who looks at lath and paper before plaster covers them.
Coats and cure time
The plaster itself is built in layers. A scratch coat is pressed through the lath and combed so the next layer can grip. A brown coat levels the wall once that first coat has set, and a finish coat of color and texture goes on last. Curing time sits between the coats, with the wall kept damp, so the layers bond without cracking. Eave closures and vent hardware go in before plaster reaches those edges. Final inspection comes after the last coat.
Stucco & Exterior in Altadena: common questions
Cement plaster on galvanized mesh and fiber cement boards each qualify. In Altadena the wall is judged together with its openings and its base, so vents, eaves and the foot of the wall get as much attention as the plaster. Where mapping covers a lot, the drawings show those items for plan check.
Patching can fit a wall with sound paper and dry sheathing. Stripping is the call when the paper has failed, because new plaster over bad paper only buries the problem. A strip is also the moment to repair framing and add proper flashing, which a patch cannot do. A tap test and a small inspection opening show which side a wall falls on.
Plaster needs to end above the ground at a metal screed that lets water escape. If the wall runs down into soil or a slab edge, that bottom band is cut out, the framing is checked, and a screed goes in with air space beneath. Landscaping beside the wall is pulled back to leave a clean strip.
