Concrete for the slab of an Encino backyard unit can travel from the street through a pump hose laid along the side of the house, so no truck or loaded buggy has to cross the yard. Lumber, drywall and roofing still need a path wide enough to carry them by hand or on a cart, and we map both routes on the first visit. The unit at the end of them gets fire-rated walls, vents and glass.

A line for the concrete

A line pump parks at the curb and pushes concrete through a hose that can snake past the house, over a low wall or through a gate too narrow for anything else. We check the length of the run and any rise along it, since both affect the pump the supplier sends. Where the hose crosses a walk or lawn it rests on boards, and a washout bin at the street catches the rinse water. On a long yard, a boom truck can reach over the house, provided overhead lines leave it room.

Carrying everything else

Framing lumber and sheet goods come in bundles small enough to carry by hand, so the lane only needs to clear a pair of shoulders and a board. Roof trusses are the exception: where they cannot turn the corner, rafters are cut on site. Windows and doors, with their tempered glass, arrive crated and are carried in last to keep them clear of other trades. Debris leaves along the same lane in bins sized to fit it, and the route is swept and matted at the end of each day so the house side stays usable.
