A camera pushed down the sewer cleanout of a Sherman Oaks house shows how deep the lateral runs, which way it heads and whether roots have cracked it. Those readings place the backyard unit, since its drain has to fall into that line by gravity or lean on a pump. Fernhill Builders settles the connection first and then wraps the unit in fire-rated siding, screened vents and tempered glass.

What the camera shows

The camera's cable counts footage as it travels, and a locator on the surface picks up the head so we can mark the line's path and depth on the ground. A deep lateral leaves room for a unit toward the back of the yard, because the new drain has distance to slope. A shallow one pulls the unit closer to the house. Cracked or root-filled pipe gets noted for repair, and that may favor lining or replacing the lateral before the new branch is tied in.

Power and gas around the same spot

The sewer sets the first boundary, and the electrical panel and gas meter refine it. A unit fed from the main panel needs capacity there, and a load calculation tells us whether the panel stays or gets upgraded. An all-electric design skips the gas branch altogether, which frees the unit from the meter's clearances. LADBS reviews the plumbing and electrical sheets with the rest of the set, and the route of every new line is drawn so an inspector can trace it before the trenches are closed.
