The shower stall decides how long someone can live in a West Hills backyard unit. A curbless floor, a bench and blocking inside the walls for grab bars let a guest with a cast and a parent with a cane use the same room, and the slab is recessed where the drain sits so water finds the trap. Planning those few inches before the pour costs little. Changing them later means breaking concrete.

Waterproofing the wet room

A shower with no curb leans on its waterproofing. We specify a bonded membrane over the pan and up the walls, a slope in the floor toward a linear or center drain, and a flood test before tile goes down. Cement board or a foam panel backs the tile, never paper-faced drywall. The bathroom fan ducts to the outside through a metal duct and a vent cap with a backdraft damper, and the vent is placed well away from the roof edge.

Glass within reach of the shower

Windows near a shower or tub are a safety item as well as a design one. Code asks for tempered glass close to wet floors, and the hardened exterior calls for it anyway, so every pane in the unit is tempered dual-pane. We frame the window high enough on the wall for privacy and for a clear tile surround. Where the lot demands ember-resistant glazing, the same product serves both rules, and the window schedule lists it once. Finished trim around the window is a material that tolerates steam and does not burn.
