ADU Construction in Studio City
Studio City ADUs with a porcelain paver entry landing embers cannot ignite, a flashed solid-core door and noncombustible walls around it.
Porcelain pavers on adjustable pedestals give the entry deck of a Studio City ADU a surface that embers cannot ignite and hard inland sun cannot warp or bleach. A wood or plastic deck at the door is often the first fuel a windblown spark finds, so we design the landing in fired stone over a concrete pad or steel frame. The walls behind it get noncombustible cladding, and the glazing is tempered.
Building the landing
The pedestals sit on a sloped concrete pad or a steel frame, and each one adjusts so the paver surface ends up level while water drains through the joints underneath. Because the gaps stay open, leaves can drop through, so the space beneath is closed at its edges with metal mesh fine enough to keep debris and embers out. Setting the landing a step under the door threshold keeps water from running inside. Pavers come in textured finishes that grip when wet, and a cracked one lifts out and gets swapped without tools.
Tying the deck to the shell
Where the deck meets the wall, flashing runs up behind the cladding so water off the pavers cannot reach the sill plate. The door is a solid-core or noncombustible unit with tempered glass, set in a frame sealed to that flashing. Siding on the same wall is fiber cement or cement plaster, which holds its ground if a burning leaf comes to rest against it. Railings, where a change in height calls for them, are steel or aluminum. Each part of the entry is then chosen against the same ember exposure as the walls around it.
ADU Construction in Studio City: common questions
Only a lot that the state's fire map covers is bound by the wildfire provisions, and LADBS can tell where a Studio City address stands. Our units follow those rules either way, from the noncombustible entry landing to the mesh-covered vents and tempered windows, since a small building beside fences and planting can catch embers on a windy night.
On a Studio City lot, the site plan shows the unit, its entry landing and the setbacks, and the wall details show how the deck flashing meets the cladding. LADBS reads those two together. The package is drawn for a qualifying one-story unit.
Designed together, house and unit can wear one exterior palette, from cladding down to the paver landing at each door. Studio City falls under LADBS, which issues a permit for each building, and we coordinate the sets so trenching and site work happen once. Lot size and setbacks decide whether both fit.
